Hazards of Online Dating

Sometimes you're the windshield; others, you're the bug.

Hannah Hardy recently found out how the bugs feel.

The metro Lousville, Kentucky woman apparently felt very strongly about being dumped by a man she'd met through an online dating website. Her actions probably speak volumes about why the unidentified man ended their short relationship.

The 28-year-old Hardy, after going to the man's apartment several times and finally discovering he no longer resided there, believed she had happened upon the car owned by the man who'd jilted her. Hardy broke out four of the vehicle's windows and then scratched her name into the paint on the driver's door, causing an estimated $6,000 in damage. There was one problem, though.

Wrong car.

Hardy, who had previously been arrested for kicking in the door of an apartment in the building in which she thought the man currently lived, was arrested and jailed.

Hardy's book-in photo reinforces an old adage: never trust a woman with pencil-thin eyebrows.

You Can't Even Trust Santa Anymore

William McKinlay, a 56-year-old Philadelphia resident, has been playing Santa Claus during the Christmas season for several years at a department store in that city. The balding, rotund man was perfect for the part, right down to his long gray/white beard.

He will not be making any repeat appearances.

Referring to himself as 'dirty old Santa', McKinlay posted an online ad saying that he was looking for a 'young 'un' with which to have sex. An extended, sexually-explicit electronic conversation ensued with a fourteen-year-old girl during which McKinlay stated that he wanted to teach the girl all about sex; that girl turned out to be Officer Tim Kearney of the Ridley Township Police Department, who called himself 'Stephanie' during their exchange.

McKinlay made arrangements to meet 'Stephanie' at a neighborhood ice cream shop, telling her to wear a sleeveless T-shirt, shorts and tennis shoes...and nothing else. When McKinlay arrived, he was arrested without incident and charged with attempted statutory sexual assault and related charges.

Unfortunately, today's electronic social media platforms make it very easy for predators such as McKinlay to prey upon the young; my hat is off to those tireless men and women who arrest and prosecute these soul-less, filthy vermin and put them where they belong: in prison for a very long time.

What Was He Thinking?

The story of American college student Otto Warmbier is a sad one, a story that should never have occurred to begin with.

A 21-year-old undergraduate student at the University of Virginia, Warmbier had traveled to Pyongyang, North Korea with a tour group through the China-based Young Pioneers Tours because, he allegedly stated, he "wanted to show my bravery and improve my reputation"; these words were spoken by Warmbier during a tearful 'confession' which was broadcast on State-run North Korean television. His alleged crime?

Trying to steal a wall-mounted propaganda poster from the hotel he was staying in.

For that alleged crime, Warmbier had been sentenced to fifteen years of hard labor in a prison camp. It is unclear why, or even if, Warmbier had actually committed the act for which he was accused. His roommate during the tour, United Kingdom resident Danny Gratton, said he hadn't seen anything to indicate that Warmbier would even commit such an act. "I got to know Otto really, really well. He was such a mature lad for his age", Gratton remarked.

Warmbier, who had been returned to the United States in a comatose state just days ago by the Communist nation, died in a Cincinnati-area hospital yesterday from 'significant loss of brain tissue.' It was reported that his body had no signs of physical abuse.

The question that immediately comes to mind is: WHY would an American citizen want to go to a Communist nation that is openly hostile to this country?

I, nor anyone else, put any stock in Warmbier's 'confession', which no doubt was scripted for him by his accusers.

However, had Otto Warmbier simply chosen NOT to visit a Communist nation dominated by a tyrannical, bloodthirsty despot with an intense hatred of freedom, he would still be alive this day.

He took a tremendous gamble and, ultimately, lost his life because of it.

Some guys go for a walk, go fishing or retreat to the garage, a place of refuge for them.

Not so for Lawrence John Ripple.

The 70-year-old Kansas man, after getting into an argument with his wife, decided he needed a sure-fire way to get away from his spouse of 33 years. Ripple was certain that robbing a bank would accomplish his goal.

Writing the robbery note in front of his wife that he would later hand to a teller at a Bank of Labor bank in Kansas City, Kansas, Ripple waited in the institution's  lobby for police to arrive. When they did, he simply stated "I'm your man." He was arrested and jailed to await trial.

The grand plan backfired, however, when Ripple was sentenced to probation and home confinement yesterday, putting him right back where his troubles started.

A Heinous Crime

Susan Malysa. Remember that name. The Boardman, Ohio woman was arrested Monday for felony child endangering after her eleven-year-old son was found duct-taped to a metal chair in her home's basement, his mouth also taped to prevent him from yelling for help.
Detective-Sergeant Chuck Hillan stated, "the child's legs were duct taped to the legs of the chair around his ankles, each leg, and then his hands were duct taped together in front of him, and then he had a piece of duct tape across his mouth."
Malysa, whose Facebook page describes her as the 'CEO of stay-at-home Mom'...was located by police at a local YMCA, where she had taken her daughter swimming, and arrested. Her son had been found by Malysa's mother, who had become concerned for his welfare. When police and paramedics examined the boy, evidence of bruising were found on his face and neck and he was taken to Akron Children's Hospital. He was later released to a family member.
Susan Malysa is now out of jail on bond and is awaiting trial.

The Sixth of June

The seemingly solid wall of noise – screaming and yelling men, thunderous explosions, the r-r-r-r-r-riiiiiipppping reports of multiple Nazi MG42s raking the beach and shallows at twenty-five rounds per second, the roaring diesel engines of  landing craft attempting to escape the hellish, bloody waters as bullets, mortar and artillery shell fragments spang off their sides…

The magnified smell of war, of burning men and equipment, their smoke stinging  eyes and choking throats of those still living, making it hard to see iron obstacles and tangle-foot wire that is strewn everywhere, effectively blocking and delaying the delivery of the craft’s load of men and equipment onto the very doorstep of Hell.

Finally, as if in slow motion, the large metal ramp of your own landing craft crashes down, splashing unheard over the noise of war into the saltwater and introducing its men to the world of death, of limbs ripped from bodies, soldiers lying everywhere in various stages of dying or who are dead already. Eyes witnessing bullet impacts and geysers of blood leaping from newly-mangled flesh, artillery rounds exploding in the wet sand and flinging those unfortunate enough to be near them skyward, most dead before landing, none fully intact.

It is D-Day, the 6th of June on the coast of Normandy, a place where the occupying German army has had well over a year to prepare for the arrival of Allied forces intent upon driving them out of the land. Over a million anti-personnel and anti-armor mines have been planted, thousands of miles of barbed wire scattered along every possible landing site off the Atlantic Ocean, reinforced concrete bunkers, gun emplacements, trenches and ‘pill boxes’ lining every square mile of what has been dubbed ‘Fortress Europe’.

One-hundred-fifty-six-thousand men have been sent to breach the walls of that fortress; before the battle is over, 37,000 American soldiers will have been killed.
For those of us who weren’t there, it is impossible to imagine the sheer terror inside those men approaching the beaches of Normandy, riding inside the landing craft and hearing those sounds, smelling the aroma of death’s spectre and, ultimately, seeing it a multitude of times over.

The patriot heroes that survived Omaha, Utah, Gold, Sword and Juno beaches and still live this day, seventy-three years later, have daily been accompanied by that horror since; their brothers already gone from this life thankfully witnessing the end of their own nightmares.

We owe all of them, living and dead, an eternal debt. We owe them honor and remembrance for the sacrifice made in the name of freedom on that day, the Sixth of June, 1944.

D-Day.

Bad Time To Go Swimming

You know you're having a bad night when you get involved in an accident and are arrested by police for driving under the influence. You're having a really bad night when you fall into a swamp during the process.

Dennis Lemon of James Island, South Carolina was involved in an injury accident on Folly Road at Battery Island Drive late Tuesday night and, as the 65-year-old was speaking with officers at the rear of The Barrel restaurant, he staggered off the end of a parking ramp and into Secessionville Creek.

Lemon, who had refused to perform any field sobriety tests, was described by responding officers as "...extremely unsteady on his feet..." , an observation reinforced by the suspect's unexpected dip in the shallow tidal swamp. After 'rescuing' the intoxicated man, Lemon repeatedly insisted that he was on Maybank Highway when he caused the accident, a 4-lane roadway a little over five miles away.

He was arrested and jailed.
